After crushing defeat in the assembly elections of Congress, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Kamal Nath met party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Tuesday.
Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath met party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Tuesday after the party’s defeat in the assembly elections. A meeting was held at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in Delhi at 7.30 pm on Tuesday. AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal was also present at the meeting. A source said that after the meeting, the high command instructed Kamal Nath to appoint a new president in Madhya Pradesh.
Before heading to Delhi, Kamal Nath held a meeting with the newly elected MLAs and the losing Congress candidates at the party office in Bhopal. In the meeting, Kamal Nath told party workers that, “There is no need to be disappointed with the defeat in the assembly elections. Everyone needs to focus on preparations for the Lok Sabha elections. We must now work wholeheartedly for the Lok Sabha elections four months from now to form the Congress government at the Centre”
By referring to the previous crushing defeat in 1977 Lok Sabha elections after the Emergency, Kamal Nath tried to boost the morale of Party candidates, MLAs and party workers. He said that, “In the 1997 Lok Sabha elections, veterans like Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi also had to face defeat but later the party made a strong comeback. The Congress won over 300 seats in the Lok Sabha three years later in 1980. Then Indira Gandhi formed the government with an absolute majority”.
Kamal Nath said that even though we have lost this election, we should forget this and work honestly for the party’s victory in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Kamal Nath asked the party’s newly elected MLAs and defeated candidates to submit a report on the reasons for defeat in 10 days. He also announced that he would tour the entire state before the Lok Sabha elections.
After meeting with party MLAs and candidates, Kamal Nath left for Delhi. At there, he met party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. Also, a meeting was held at Kharge’s residence in Delhi at 7.30 pm on Tuesday in which AICC general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal was also present, news agency ANI quoted a source as saying. After the meeting, the high command instructed Kamal Nath to appoint a new president in Madhya Pradesh.
This development has come to light at a time when the reasons for the defeat are being churned in the party. Earlier too, there were reports quoting sources that the Congress high command is unhappy with the party’s performance in MP. The Congress high command may seek Kamal Nath’s resignation. Now the news agency ANI has worked to stamp those reports by quoting sources. However, no official statement has been revealed from the party yet. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has expressed apprehension of tampering with electronic voting machines in Madhya Pradesh. Some Congress candidates have also raised questions about the EVMs.
