Criminal Bills: Chidambaram expresses displeasure over new criminal law, says new Indian Penal Code made more stringent.
Kapil Sibal on Monday said 90 percent of the provisions of the three criminal bills are similar to existing laws. He said these laws were passed when 146 opposition MPs were facing suspension from Parliament. The way these Bills were passed, I feel our constitutional bodies should not have functioned in this manner.
Criminal Bills:After President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to three new criminal justice laws, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram. Chidambaram said on Monday that the new Indian Penal Code has become more stringent. He also said that whichever government is formed in 2024, it should review these bills and remove the draconian provisions.
“As Christmas celebrations come to an end, the news comes that the President has given his assent to three Criminal Justice Bills,” Chidambaram said in a post on Internet Media X. The new Indian Penal Code has become more stringent. He added “If you realise that the code is often used against the poor, labourers and weaker sections, the law will become an instrument of oppression against these sections of the people.”
