Fake video on reservation goes viral, Delhi Police in action

News agency PTI quoted Delhi Police sources as saying,  “The Special Cell has registered an FIR in connection with the circulation of a fake video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s speech regarding reservation issues on various social media platforms.” The Home Ministry had written in the complaint that it has been found that some morphed videos are being circulated by users of Facebook and Twitter.

After the case was registered, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO)  unit of the Special Cell has now started investigation.

The Delhi Police has written to X and other social media platforms seeking information about the source of this fake video, which was shared online. The Special Cell of Police had registered an FIR in the case of Shah’s doctored video following a complaint from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre  (I4C)  under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO)  unit of the Special Cell has now approached the social media platform to identify the source of the video and those who spread it.

Actually, a speech of Amit Shah has been tampered with, which is becoming increasingly viral on social media. In it, Shah is heard saying, “If the Bharatiya Janata Party forms the government, we will end the reservation of non-constitutional SCs, STs and OBCs.” ‘

A complaint was filed on Monday against the Maharashtra Youth Congress and 16 others for sharing a fake video of Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Saha,  in which he was seen announcing a curtailment of reservation rights of SCs,  STs and OBCs. Mumbai BJP office-bearer Prateek Karpe filed a complaint against the complainant at the Bandra Kurla Complex cyber police station, an official said.

The complainant told the police that Shah’s fake video was shared widely by the accused persons with a malicious intention to defame him. According to the complaint, the fake video shows Shah announcing a curtailment of reservation rights given to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. However, Karpe said the original video, from where this fake video was made, has completely different words and connotations.

The accused persons made a deep-fake video of the speech and circulated widely on various social media platforms. He said that the police should immediately remove the deepfake video and register a case against the accused persons,  who shared it with the intention of causing disruption, enmity and hatred among different castes.

Senior officials of the cyber wing were also present in the meeting.  A notice will be issued against the social media handles from which Shah’s fake video has been shared and he will be questioned by the Delhi Police.

While all senior BJP politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi have assured that there will be no change in the Constitution regarding reservation.
