Mizoram CM Oath: Mizoram power in the hands of former IPS,  Lalduhoma, including 11 ministers, takes oath as CM

Along with Lalduhoma,  11 more ZPM MLAs also took oath as ministers. Mizoram, with a 40-member  assembly, has 12  ministers, including the chief minister.  The swearing-in ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan where Mizo National Front leader and outgoing Chief Minister Zoramthanga was present.  All MLAs, including MNF legislature party leader Lalchandma Ralte, attended the event Mizoram CM Oath Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma was sworn in as the Chief Minister (CM)  of Mizoram on Friday.  Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati administered the oath of office and secrecy to Lalduhoma. Along with him, 11 more ZPM MLAs will also take oath as ministers. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan where Mizo National Front leader and outgoing Chief Minister Zoramthanga was present.

 All the MLAs, including  MNF legislature party leader Lalchandma Ralte, attended the event. Former chief minister Lal Thanhawla was also present there. On Tuesday, the ZPM legislature party elected Lalduhoma as its leader and K Sapadanga as its deputy leader.

Mizoram, with a 40-member  assembly, can have  12  ministers, including the chief minister.  The ZPM, which was only registered as a political party in 2019,  emerged victorious in the assembly elections by winning  27 seats.  In the  2018 elections, it got only eight seats.

In the Mizoram Assembly Election 2023, Lalduhoma was elected MLA from the Serchhip Assembly constituency. He got a total of 8314 votes.

Lalduhoma: From IPS to Chief Minister of Mizoram

 74-year-old Lalduhoma is a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.  In  1977, he was selected for  IPS. During his illustrious career, he also served as the security in charge of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s security in  1982.

After leaving the ISP, he became a Congress MP in  1984. He later resigned from Congress and became the first MP in the country to be disqualified under the anti-defection law in November  1988.

Lalduhoma played an active role in ending insurgency in Mizoram, which opened the way for the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in  1986. He later formed the Mizo National Front (Nationalist),  which was later renamed the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP)  in  1997. In 2003, he won the assembly election as a ZNP candidate.

In 2017,  the Zoram Nationalist Party joined a six-party coalition to form the Zoram People’s Movement  (ZPM).  In the  2018 Mizoram Assembly elections, Lalduhoma was elected as an independent MLA, as the  ZPM   was yet to be recognized by the Election Commission of India (ECI).  

In 2019, ZPM  was recognized as a political party on behalf of the ECI. In 2020, Lalduhoma was disqualified as an MLA under the anti-defection law. In 2021,  he contested the by-election from Serchhip as  a ZPM candidate and won.
